Romanesque Missal with Charming Faces
Type: Leaves & Fragments
Romanesque Missal with Faces. Single fragment on vellum. Italy, ca. 1190: 230 mm x 53 mm. Remains of 16 lines. Four two-line rubricated initials, two with faces, one tonsured, added to the interiors in modern pen. A note in the lower margin in modern pen. Text: the “verso” has rubrics that seem to say, “post epiphaniam” and “Secreta,” so texts in this leaf will be for masses after Epiphany. Condition: lifted from a binding, hence stained on the one side; soiled.
