Decorative Psalter Folio from the Collection of Otto F. Ege

Genre: , , ,

Flemish Psalter ex Otto F. Ege. Single folio on vellum. Flanders, ca. 1275-1300: 126 mm x 92 mm (justification, 70 mm x 47 mm). Single column, 15 lines. Lightly ruled in plummet; unfoliated. Decoration: on the verso, a two-line initial D in gold on blue and brick grounds with a bar-border extension the length of the inner margin; alternating blue and gold versal initials with red and blue penwork initials; colored penwork line-fillers. Text: Psalm 61.6-13 (end) meaopera sua; Psalm 62.1-5 vita mea. Provenance: the manuscript was sold by Sotheby’s in 1943 and again in 1949. Because it appeared in Ege’s Fifty Original Leaves portfolio (issued posthumously around 1953), this manuscript was purchased specifically for dismemberment. Mrs. Ege ultimately undertook the dispersal in the 1950s. See S. Gwara, Otto Ege’s Manuscripts (Cayce, SC, 2013), Handlist 20. Condition: soiled, a slight crease; hinged and attached to an original Ege mat annotated in Mrs. Ege’s script at bottom: “1310 A.D. Flanders Psalter”; “$15.00.”
